9:15 pm - AFI Movie Meme, from ka3ytl
AFI's 10 Top 10 honors the ten greatest American films in ten classic film genres. Presented by the American Film Institute (AFI), the lists were unveiled on a television special broadcast by CBS on June 17, 2008.

Bold the ones you've seen, strike-out the ones you hated, italicize those you started but never finished and underline the ones you loved.

12:25 pm - superb shopping experience
It's rare that I get excited about things at the grocery store, but I'm officially excited now.
The store where we normally shop now has a scan-as-you-go system. I used it for the first time last night. The scanner is a snap to use. I was able to change my mind and "return" items without a hassle. It has a little annoying advertisement thing that comes up to convince you to buy various things that are on sale, but that's life.
I bring my own bags, so I just bagged my stuff as I went along. That means I was able to get my bags organized EXACTLY THE WAY I LIKE THEM. When I was done, I went up to the self-checkout, scanned the "end of order" barcode, paid, took my receipt, and I was on my way.
I frequently use the self-checkout anyway because the lines are always much shorter, but when I have a bunch of stuff and there isn't a bagger, my stuff gets piled up at the end of the belt before I finish. This eliminates that whole process.
I haven't tried buying produce yet, so that may be a pain, but it looks like they have things well set up for that.
The only problem I had last night was misjudging the weight of my bags and kind of overfilling one of them. Since I didn't need to lift the bags until I got to my car, there was no way to really tell.

Yay for technology!

9:43 am - the almost failed quest for caffeine
Okay, I'm not a caffeine person. I don't rely on it to wake up in the morning. But today, I was really exhausted when I got to work, so I decided to get a cappuccino from the shop downstairs. I can't handle drinking real coffee. So I got it and it was super hot, so I just brought it upstairs with me. I started sipping at it. It didn't seem quite right, but it was still so hot that I wasn't positive there was something wrong. I went about doing other things and when I tried it again, I knew for sure that it was really just glorified flavored hot water.
I took it downstairs to complain. The machine was out of mix, so the cashier replaced it. She tested it and found that it still wasn't working, so I got a refund.

See, the whole reason I went for that in the first place was because I don't like drinking soda in the morning. But with limited options, I went to the vending machine. I was almost defeated when it started refusing my quarters. But I finally succeeded, and now I have a Coke sitting on my desk.

Quite frankly, I think the whole ordeal wore me out more than if I'd just tried to wake up on my own without and chemical stimulation.
I guess I know for next time.

9:11 pm - 100th Anniversary of Kiltie Band
In my (snail) mailbox today:

"Save the Date!
October 25, 2008
Be part of the band once again at halftime of the football game.
Originated in 1908 by just seven students, the Kiltie Band celebrates its 100th anniversary at this year's Homecoming, October 23-26."
//blah blah about contacting if I want to come.//

It's funny that J just asked me a few days ago if I wanted to go to Homecoming and I said no. Now I'm kind of thinking about it.
Now, there's a remarkably small number of people on my friends list who were in Kiltie and don't live in either Pittsburgh (who I figure will do it if they're free) or DC (who I see frequently anyway). But I'll put the question to the masses:
Is this something you're likely to participate in or spectate at? Should we come?

10:32 am - changing my default user pic
This is the last post I'm going to make with Ozma's picture.
She's been gone for over a year.
I still think of her often, but we've all done well with moving on.

The new pic is one of both our cats sitting together on the windowsill.
It's a nice representation of our cat life now.

11:38 pm - the end of an era
I finished the roll of plastic wrap today.
This is probably not a big event in most households, but we bought this plastic wrap right after we got married. Specifically, on the day after our wedding, I was researching the proper way to freeze the top of the wedding cake (yeah, kinda late to be figuring it out), and the instructions I found involved a combination of aluminum foil and plastic wrap. So I went down the street to the convenience store to pick up the plastic wrap, since we had none in the house.
And now, nearly six years later, it's gone.
I'm debating whether to put it on the shopping list. I mean, it's pretty obvious that we don't use it very much.

I was just scanning my Spam folder (looking for and not finding the Tuesday Trivia, FWIW) and found an email in there that I sent and BCC'd MYSELF.

Why would I spam myself?

12:45 pm - it must be a "thing"
First, an explanation.
The way our commuting life works is this:
I take the bus to the Metro in the morning. J drives A to school, and then parks at the Metro.
In the evening, I get the car from the Metro, pick up A, and then either pick up J or go home.
Suffice it to say, I know generally where the car gets parked everyday, but not exactly.

Yesterday, I was walking in the general direction of the car. There are a list of features I notice about the car as I approach it and confirm that it's the right one. Yesterday, it went like this:
make/model/color - check
plain MD tags - check (this is easier to tell from far away, even before seeing the actual characters)
missing Honda emblem on front - check
ezPass - uncheck?

I was a little wary about this car in the first place because it's rare that J gets a parking spot that close. But how many people park at this Metro station, own a green Honda Civic of approximately the same model year, with a moonroof, and are missing the Honda emblem?
Apparently two.

J's has been missing for awhile. I want to say it's been since we lived in TX. But it seems strange to me that it'd be a common item to steal. I mean, it's seriously not that exciting.

11:34 am - economic sense?
When I rode the bus yesterday, I saw a sign that depressed me.
They're proposing to increase certain fares.
I understand the need to make more money, but the increase they propose that directly affects me is just ludicrous.

I buy a 20-trip ticket for $20. They're proposing to increase the cost for that to $27. That changes my per trip cost from $1.00 to $1.35. I know, all you Pittsburgh folks are balking at how cheap this is. But wait, there's more.
The current normal cash fare is $1.35, which they're not proposing to increase. The fare if I use my SmarTrip card (the same one that's for the Metro) is $1.25. So, not only would there be no advantage to me buying the 20-trip thing, I would actually lose money on the deal, since I'm horrible about carrying change and would just use my SmarTrip card anyway.
Do they think the average bus rider can't do simple division?

10:23 am - dumb comments from strangers
Why do strangers make such dumb comments that prove they have a firm grasp of the obvious?
Today while walking out of the Metro, some guy walking past me said, "Man, you have some long hair." Duh. It's not a compliment, just a statement of fact.
It'd be the same as someone saying to me in passing, "Hey, you're pregnant." Of course, it turns out that people I know can't even figure that out, so I'm safe there. Hah.

8:40 am - the juice conspiracy
On Thursday or Friday of last week, I got to work wanting orange juice. So I did the only thing I could. I went downstairs to the cafeteria to get some. I was denied. They had *no* Minute Maid bottles AT ALL. Like, there was a half empty fridge where the Minute Maid should have been, and it wasn't. My last resort was to get some out of the fountain dispenser. But when I went to put my cup under it, all that came out was slightly orange-colored water. Then I see the almost non-existent LED that indicates that the juice is out. *sigh* I eventually ended up getting OJ at lunch time, but it's seriously just NOT THE SAME.

AND THEN, this morning I wanted apple juice. I went to the same cafeteria with the same fridge of juices. They had plenty of orange juice, but no apple juice! Luckily, the fountain dispenser was actually working and had AJ, otherwise I would have been *really* convinced of a conspiracy.

4:20 pm - books read
Am I allowed to include children's books on my list of books read for the year if I hadn't read them before (or don't remember reading them) and are being read aloud to my kid, rather than reading them to myself for my own enjoyment?
